Design of robotics arm and control of 4 and 5 wire steppers

Hi friends,
I am trying to make a ROBOT with single arm and some sensors,I think all the related jobs are easy except arm designing.How can i design an arm and i need to control 4wire and 5 wire stepper motors how can i control it..

you can do it with any uC designed for these perposes
but you need define how many degrees of freedom in your robot to know what is the good circuit.

more details about the mecanics of the arm, and i try to give you some indications
