I started with Modelsim when I learned VHDL/Verilog. I used it for small designs and I believe it's a good simulator.
For large designs I think NC-VHDL/NC-Verilog are better.

I think that NC is much better than modelsim. Modelsim is good for PC and small designs.....but it is very slow on big designs. I have run both simulators on solaris machines and NC is much better.

VCS/NCV is very fast and simple for verilog simulation, the modelsim is suit to the VHDL, and the usually VCS is at least equal to the NCV at the speed, the modlesim is much more slow for verilog
