If you are looking to connect the serial I/O pins of the MCU to a PC via USB, I'd recommend the FTDI232RL or SiLabs cp2102 or cp2103. The FTDI chip comes in a more friendly package. The SiLabs part is tiny... google will give you the datasheets for these parts.

These chips are incredibly easy to use.
