What can be the drill size while creating the geomentry to insert the wire of 1 mm thickness,is it exactly 1mm drill or any calculations available ?

You should use a drill with bigger dia so that the solder can flow. I would choose 1,2mm

For better soldeing ,you can use +/- 2 mil tolerence.
Its should be okay for all non plated drill holes..........

Hi Anusuya,

for 1mm wire thickness,it is good to have 5-8 mils more tolerance to solder it to the plated thru holes.

And again remember it depends upon the thickness of the wire, the tolerance changes to the thickness..

Check the link below...

Also......

Old references from before the lead free introduction are not exactly correct now as lead free solder does not wick up/down the hole as well, so where you may have had a 1mm hole for a 0.8mm lead, now you would be better of having a 0.9mm hole.

It does make it just a little harder to insert components but the sodlering is much better.

it is all trial and error to see what is best for your assembly processes.

Most of the time, the drill size is listed on the manufacturers' web site, or available per request.

Generally what we follow is and what IPC specifies is drill shall be +10mils w.r.t lead size.

Drill size=lead size + 10 mils.
