the basic things which is needed for a power Supply are
the bridge Rectifiers, the filers and the regulators.
for filter we need an RC and for regulator we need a Zener Diode.
or you may also use a voltage regulator IC like 7805 a five volts regulator. There are also different kinds of transformer if you are going to use one then you must also consider that.
Another thing is Power. For what is the purpose of the power supply and how much power the load will comsume this ia essential because you might burn a transformer or your power supply circuit if the power required for your load exceeds Wattage that your power supply can give. It is just a simple computation. P = I * V P=power, I=current, V=voltage.
one of the most Basic things to know about power supply design is:- is it linear or switch mode power supply?. Then comes all other things, like rectifiers, filters regulators, because all these things depends on the type i.e linear or SMPS.
