how to calculate frequency

i want to ask a question regarding the measurement of the frequency

i am looking for a particular signal
the signal to noise ration is not very high

i am detecting the presence of the signal via measuring the amplitude of signal
whenever the strength of the signal is higher then noise level , infact quite high
then i can detect the presence of the signal

one question arouse in my mind

to detect the signal via frequecny

how can i calculate the signal frequency ?

as if i am able to judge the frquency of the signal i might use tone detector circuitory

also i read about the PLL
can any one suggest me some book where the use of PLL circuit for differnct application is listed

books tells how PLL work , how it is made but I want to learn that how can i use PLL ic for differnt application

See concepts in Lock in amplfier. Use a tuned amplfier @ your signal freq, the S/n will improve.
actually building Lock in amplfier you and recover your signal burried in noise upto 100k times.!
