Every transmission line must be terminated to minimize reflections at the ends of the line. If 50 Ohm is transmission line impedance, then it must be terminated with 50 Ohms (49.9 Ohms) resistor.
To avois reflections, termination resistor must be with the same value, as charatceristic impedance of cable. Characteristic impedance of cables used in 10base2 and 10base5 is 50 Ohm. 49.9 Ohm is the closest value to 50 Ohm in resistor E96 series, and guarantee matching. Tolerance of coaxial cable impedance is 1% for quality cables and much worse for cheap ones.
