It is a port of the GCC compiler. The dsPics and 24 series have a 16 bit core, and with the GCC compiler are hard to beat. It's like stepping up a level!

I concur with ElecThai. CCS is a capable compiler, it's easy to learn too and debugging is very easy with CCS in-circuit debugger/programmer.
