Macro & Std Cell

standard cell - basic logic cells

macro - a function created from the standard cells. an example would be "clock gating cell"

Hard Macro - An IP placed and routed which can just be used in a chip.

Re: Macro & Std Cell

Macro is block....for example memories are referred to as hard macros...in other words clusters of cells bound together in a predefined area. Macro can be built a number of standard cell.

Standardcell is like an individual building block; you can use any number of these and place them anywhere you want based on your design inside the core.

Macro & Std Cell

Macros are IPs(intellectual property) where the frontend guys purchase it from the IP vendor..Macros contains memories, PLL and so on...Its a predefined library..

Standard cell is also same but in the case of full custom we design it manually(i.e designing of libraries) and in the case of semicustom it becomes a predefined library.........

Hope u got this...
