mechanical tilt

Dear All,
I am confused about both types of tilts given to BTS Antenna in GSM networks.
Someone please clarify it.
Thank you.

electrical tilt

mechanical tilt implies that an antenna is physically moved (tilted) while electrically tilting usually implies that a phase taper is introduced in the aperture to tilt or scan the beam.

electrical and mechanical tilt

Mechanical tilt:
Beam tilted by placement of the antenna with the help of mounting accessories.
Electrical tilt:
Beam tilted by varing the phase (using phase shifters)of the antenna elements.

regards,
balaguru.

Hi,

To complete previous answers, when you want to steer the radiation pattern of an antenna you can do it either with a mechanical tilt or electrical tilt (meaning that the antenna does not rotates mechanically but the pattern rotates). The latter can only be done when you have an array antenna. If you change the phase shift between elements, the radiation pattern will be rotated automatically. This is the Electrical beam tilt.
