What does channel equilization mean?

what's the meaning of channel equilization, anybody can figure it out for me, or show me some literature on it, thx in advance!

channel equilization

if the channel have transfer function H(f) then u add some equalizer to neutralize the channel effect (i.e. u add 1/H(f) in the signal path)
