to make negative votage for lcd contrast adjustment from simple supply voltage. BTW with poor stability for onstrast voltage though But imho it does not need to be better.
When using such implementation remember that all current consumpted by this design will go thorough D4 as well so need to choose right diode capable to withstand that current.
