ubuntu 7.04 sound problem

hi friends,
i have a problem with ubuntu 7.04 running on my desktop, the system has stopped producing sound.it doesn't produce sound when logging in or logging out, or even when the audio player is playing.I thought it was a problem with the speakers but when i booted in windows xp all was well.please help me sort out this problem.
