Transmitter aerial ~1m, receiver aerial ~ .3m. Changing the frequency of the Tx will put you out of band (but should not stop it working). Build a diode detector probe, and measure the voltage between the aerial and the ground of the TX, when you send data, you should be able to see a small voltage. Adjust the circuit for a maximum. Now you have to get the receiver to lock up, the coil you are not sure about is the main "tuning" component for the RX, so try adding/subtracting turns and with some luck the RX will spring into life.
