i found in junk yard an old separately excited dc motor and i want to use this motor in a project and i was wondering if i can run it with lower voltage than the rating .

Rating (3kw , 200v )

desired operating voltage 72v (offcourse with less power maybe 1kw , no problem with that )

what will happen ? is there any danger ? i now the rotor can variable voltage , that's how speed control can be achieved . but what worries me is that i am running the filed windings at a constant 1/3 of there voltage rating which gives a weak field which gives very high speeds and could destroy the motor ?! correct me i am newbie in these types of motors
