voltage pwm design using 555

hi all. can someone help me to build a buck converter through pwm technique. first i want to use a 555 IC. but it will also be great to take any suggestions about any kind of techniques.
for designing the circuit using IC 555, if i connect the output of 555 to the FET's gate, how can i drive the FET? an optocoupler or something else is needed? how should the connection of comparator be? i have to learn everything about it. thanx everybody...

ic555 mosfet

If the supply voltage is 12 to 15 vDC then you can directly drive the gate of the MOSFET through a resistor (56 ohms or less) and a diode (1N4148 or any small switching diode) from the PIN 3 of the 555
