Swapp the crystal on the ICD1 from 3.68 mhz to 20mhz upp the baud rate to 115200 and it programs and debugs all devices including the 18xxxx series. The reborn ICD1 now seems as fast or faster than the hockey puck ever was.

Don't you have to modify the ICD firmware, not even the Baud Rate divisor register ?
What about the other timing functions, don't they get affected by the crystal change ? :?:
You don't only swap the crystal, you also swap the Development Environment from MPLAB to CCS. You probably also have to swap the compiler. I wonder if Hi-Tech, for instance, is compatible with CCS Development Environment.
