Do I require additional usb ics as such?
I'm quite confuse over the connections to the chip

Do I require additional usb ics like for in the case of serial port using a max232?

16f877 cannot be directly connected to a usb if you want to connect it then you need to convert USB to serial using a converter chip such as FT232 from FTDI or you may use a microcontroller with built in usb interface such as 18f2550 and 18f4550.

what do you mean by that? what ic are you refering to? if you are reffering to ft232 ic it is not just a protection ic but a signal/protocol converter too.

i do not have any particular IC in mind.
Maybe talk about USB6B1 (usb protection IC). Is it necesaary to include this for the UBS port?
