The ATMEGA8A ends with an 'A' while the ATMEGA8L ends with an 'L'. But who knows? Maybe it's not the only difference...perhaps you should consult the device data sheet for more information.

L version = 2.7-5.5 IIRC & only up to 8MHz Non-L version = (4.5-5.5 IIRC) and goes up to 16MHz
