You might want to look at Transceiver and System Design for Digital Communications by Scott R Bullock. It is good introduction but is oriented more to direct sequence spread spectrum. But all the basics on demod/mod syncronization etc are there.

The synchronization, equalizer, demodulation are very broad research area. For different communication system, there are different methods. As a starter, you need focus on a speific system such as DVB-H, understand the basic concept and then begin to work a particular problem for the digital receiver.
