I think the main benefit is that there is so much in-compatibility in Linux between versions. We are here to do EDA, not to fix library problems in Linux.
I am happy with my Sun, although a bit slow. When I install something it runs. Try install IC50, Apollo, Synopsys DC, and HSIM on practically ANY Linux Redhat version, and you have tons of problems.
