433 mhz rf modules

I've to check my transmitter n receiver of the rf module. I've 3 pins in transmitter i.e gnd,vcc,transmit_data and 3 pins on receiver-gnd,vcc,receive_data. After giving 5v to vcc to both and gnds connected appropriately,if i short vcc n data in transmitter, i should get 5v at data line of the receiver. If I don't get, should i conclude that RF modules are not working or there can be something else that can go wrong??

Please help asap!
thank you

It is possible that they will only work with AC modulation. Put say 1kHz into the transmitter and look for it on the receiver. You could check the transmitter/receiver specifications for min/max modulation frequency.
