Is it safe to install linux as a secondary operating system on laptops which come equipped with Windows OS as Vista? Can we use the same method as in a desktop PC?

Yes u can.
empty one partion totally and the install linux(to be on a safe side have a bacup of ur data)

You need to choose compatible Linux distro so that it will work nicely with your laptop hardware.

Instead of dual-boot, you can also install it in virtual machine like vmware or virtualbox, this way you can access your linux in window ( including vista ) and share files.

It is safe as long as its done properly. Remember that any change in partition will delete all the data in that partition.
