How to write a generic counter as logarithmic relation?

Hi,

I want to make genric counter. I will give the mod count and I want to fix accordingly the nuber of bits required for counting.

Pls tell hw to write that as it is logirithmic relation.


generic(
mod_count : integer := 4);

port(

..
counter: std_logic_vector(?? downto 0);

...);
