[51] How to program 44 pins pic microcontroller with microstick programmer

I would like to ask if is possible to program a 44 pins microcontroller (pic) with a microstick ? (microstick provide support for 28 pins pic and that's why i ask about 44 pins )

PIC processors normally only need 5 connections to program them. Ground, VDD, PGM, PGC, PGD and MCLR/VPP. Some need even fewer pins. So most of the 28 pins you have are not used anyway. You need to make an adapter to extend the appropriate pins from the 28-pin socket to a new one to hold the 44-pin IC or alternatively, see if it is possible to use ICSP where you connect to the PIC while it is already mounted on the PCB.

Hi,

Its often possible to program the same code into a larger chip from the same family without any modification eg a 28 pin 18F2550 code into a 40 pin 4550.

However never tried it with those Sticks and think you will just have to try a 44 pin chip, though suspect its down to the controlling software, they might have put traps in to prevent folk doing what you are trying to do, rather than buy a pickit/icd.

Keep any extension wires to a 44pin chip as short as possible to avoid signal loss. eg less than 150mm
