Hi Blooz,
What exactly happening you have not mentioned.
So I am assuming the X is not starting on your system.
Well try this:
1) Boot into runlevel -3
2) login to your user account (not super user)
3) execute "X -configure"
it will generate a Xorg.conf file in your current directory.
Now execute the following
X -config <pathe to newly created conf>
if it displays a proper X screen then you are done.
Else please send some picture what exactly happening I will try to fix it.

the other case is While Installation progress after reaching a certain stage entire screen goes blank ....expereienced with MUsic OS and earlier versions of ubuntu 7.1 backwards ....For Debian lenny the entire Installation will take place with out any problem but when you reastart a s paert of installation the screen goes blank ...and shows up a 'HZ' Boxed Icon ....
I guess I figured out your problem.
It is due to dot clok frequency mismatch.
Well I think you have some push buttons on the bezel of your monitor just bellow the display area.
They may include a menu, brightness screen size screen positioning etc...
You have to fiddle with those to get a proper screen.
But keep in mind if you have dual boot with windows then every time you go into dows you have to readjust the screen.
else there was a software available which could reprogram the VDU system for Xfree86 but I have not seen those since FC6.
Well I use Fedora On my laptop and Desktop.
There is another way to avoid this issue too. if you can get an LCD monitor and a new Display card. But it involves money.
Any ways please try what I have suggested above it will solve your problem.

Well I am not Ubuntu Guy, Well if this happens on FC 2,3,4... then tell me I can help you.
Well there was a version of Xorg not( XFree86) which used to display a Curses kind of dialogue box in the centre of the screen.
That is due to the in-consistent conf file. If you can supply few more details Then I may help you.

From your screenshot, I ma sure it is the issue with X configuration.
So Please follow the steps I have described above.
by the way the Hz ? is asking for a valid scan frequency.
What is your Display card or chipset?
And if you don't mind then can you tell me how old is the hardware?
Have you checked with the linux compatibility chart?
by any chance the display is ATI or Nvidia?
Well have you tried with driver=Vesa in xorg.conf ?
if above line doesn't solve the problem then you have to get a proper driver from your graphic card vendor.
Please answer all the above Questions so I can get an understanding of what is wrong.
