I am studying a CW Receiver. It has three cascaded amplifiers (controlled by attenuators) then there is a dip-lexer followed by two detectors for each receive channels.

Just before the amplifiers, there are some components installed which according to the manual of the receiver is the modulator.

But I do not understand what can be function of a modulator at the receiver side? As I am myself deal with passive components of RF circuit. So please ignore my very crude observation of a CW receiver.
