Can anyone give me a clear definition about the two terms:active & passive? Are they have some relationship to "linear" & "nonlinear"? Is diode an ative component or passive component? Thanks!

Passive devices : the devices where electron flow ( current ) cannot be controlled electrically. Linear and Nonlinear generally applies to Active devices, even if there is no Passive device perfect linear. Following the above definition, diode is an Active device.
