I can imagine how this failed.
I failed once too after spending a month to design a sine resonant power supply for Lexmark laser printers as a 2nd source. It was high volume like 10Kpc/day and low cost , 4 output 1% tolerance PWM control Hi-V =10kV~15kV with a "ballpark" sales price around $23 and a mfg cost of around $18.
I lost the bid because my design was similar in simplicity and they thought it was too much risk of patent wars.
It was a sine resonant step-up transformer which requires no shielding and closed loop feedback of their main source. They only wanted two suppliers for redundancy and leverage on price. We were a contract manufacturer and my job was Design Services to support getting new contracts.
