Can you substitute 8051 with PIC16F877A?

Hi I am making may final project this year about microcontroller, and i am a newbie for this field...So i need help about this field, can 8051 microcontroller can be substituted to PIC16F877A microcontroller?? My project is all about PC controlled burglar alarm system and the circuit of it can be found in the EPE issue of 2008 from april to may.
Anyone has an idea of this??

I'm not clear about this statement. What's exactly you are telling?

At least pin configuration can`t. Yes you can substitute 8051 to PIC if you have same programming skills for PIC as you have for 8051.
