Are you in the US/Canada/Mexico or other country where the nominal AC voltage is 120VAC?
If so, a full-wave SCR controller will provide the required VDC average voltage.
Vave = Vrms/1.11 or 108 volts at full conduction.
By adjusting the SCR firing angle you can get the required voltage.
Because in the old days, 1970s, the only way to control DC motors were with thyristors (transistors with a rugged enough SOA did not exist), that is the reason that oddball DC voltage was introduced.
