Why not? Oister could make one board with 2 largely separate section for each of the controllers. At least, they could share power. I agree that from industrial standpoint it doesn't make a lot of sense to use 2 controllers with similar capabilities from 2 different families. But it's an academic (undergraduate?) project, so it doesn't necessarily have to make a lot of sense.
