I believe you can connect it directly even without a resistor, or maybe just a small resistor - say 100ohm or less. IMHO without resistor is better for fast switching, since MOSFET's are like large caps ~ 1nF or more. Your larger resistor's will charge this slower (based on RC time constant), hence switch the MOSFET slower.
