Impedance matching: shunt-stub vs. series-stub

shunt stub matching

Hi,

I've found this document (https://www.ittc.ku.edu/~jstiles/723/handouts/section_5_2_Single_Stub_Tuning_package.pdf) about impedance matching and I'm a bit confused about the drawings at the moment - so maybe someone out there can help me. Am I right that...

- a shunt-stub is used ONLY for unbalanced lines
- a series-stub is used ONLY for balanced (differential) lines

?

Added after 35 minutes:

The attached picture (microstrip line) is a shunt-stub, right?

How would a series-stub look like in microstrip?
 

The only way I know is to add a two conductor structure on top of the microstrip, like adding the coax line below.

Other methods "simulate" a series line, like a coupled microstrip line in series (like in the second sketch), but are really not series tem structures. They are analyzed like microstrip coupled lines.
