Separate Big FSM into Small FSMs

Hello all,

I am writing a HDL in big FSM (a one-hot FSM with beyond 20 states), and my boss said it like a software style but not a hardware style.

He recommand me to separate the big FSM into small FSMs, do you think what handshaking protocals (between the small FSMs) should I adopt to realize it? And any good tools to separate it automatically? And any good reference notes on this subject?

Any notes on writing a good FSM? Connecting FSMs styles? Thanks!

Your teacher just wanted you to divided big fsm into several small fsm. His main idea is put the small fsm into the right small component. It will simpler your design.
