matching the characters in vhdl

thank you for your reply.Now i am able to read from a file and writing data to the file.
But the problem a am facing now is matching two characters in vhdl.suppose i am reading a character like 'a'
from the file and reading the another character from another file suppose 'b'.now i have to chek that whether
these two characters are equal or not.so to solve this problem if you have any easy solution then please respond
me.Waiting for the reply.

if char1 = char2 then
-- do something

usually works for me.
