what is the microcontroller you want to use ?
i use iar for avr for more than one year
there are application note from atmel tell you about how to start iar with avr
if you need it i can prviode a link or you can search through atmel site
and if you need any help you can ask me any time
The beauty of IAR is that it has a very easy to use IDE that is consistant across platforms. Also, it comes with some very good examples that should get you going. Don't be afraid to call their customer support with specific questions. Also, the applications engineers from the micro company can help you out with IAR because if they have it listed as an approved compiler, they have sone extensive work with IAR to get to that point.

yes , you can make simulation for ports and timers but it's not easy as keil you have to write some micro to do this job
you can use avr studio with iar by make iar make coff output file and use it with avr studio for debug .
