what would happen to the microcontroller if the configuration bits are not specified? will it work or not? Also, what would then be the default set up for the config bits?

What microcontroller? What configuration bits? Are you expecting us to read your mind?

Well, usually they're set to a default value. So, the microcontroller will work, just maybe not as you planned.

You should specify which microcontroller.

Sorry about that.. I'm using PIC16F877A and i was just wondering what would happen if i did not set my configuration bits (i.e. XT HS for oscillator)?

If you read the data sheet, it will tell you what the defaults are. Maybe they'll work for your application, maybe not. YOU need to decide that.
