Hello,
Anyone know about the difference between microchip icd2 and simulator (mplab sim)? I found that microchip icd2 has a lot of limitation in debugging and needs actual device. On the other hand, mplab simulator does not need actual device. So, what are the advantages of icd2?

Thanks,
ako

Salam,

The advantage of the In Circuit Debugger ICD, Is to simulate your code in the real time.

For example, you can connect your ICD to your target circuit, then you can program and debug it.
You can run your code step by step or you can set breakpoints, see the internal registers changes, ....
then see the effect on your target circuit, so you can easy find the fault in your circuits or code and update it quickly.

Bye

Hi,

What SphinX wrote is correct, but let me add one more thing.
The MPLAB SIM is a program that was writen to imitate the hardware. From my experiance there is a BIG diffreance between the 2. I already got a repaly from Microchip about few bugs that they have in the SIM and there is no way around the BUG....
So for best resaults, use the ICD2 even though yuou have only 1 break point.

If you have lots of money on hand ( ~$2000 ), get the ICD2000. Fast, relaible and have 3 breakpoints...

Good luck.

hai

yes what sphinz and gidimiz are correct
in mplab you can simulate
but in icd2
you can simulate in realtime and see the corresponding
actions in the hardware
