ZibBee/XBee - Questions

What is ZigBee? I've done some research, maybe it wasnt good enough,
But how does ZigBee works? Its for monitoring? Controlling? RF Communication? Do I programm it ?

It is not used for monitoring. data transfer happens with the help of some network standards which uses some encryption techniques for providing security. Since it is an established std, u can't able to program it. Also, programmable zigbee devices were available in market nowadays..
