Why there is always a 0 register (containing 0) inside the chip?

Why there is always a 0 register (containing 0) inside the chip?
I have read some book of microprocessor design and all of them put one of the register hardwired to 0? why we need such a 0? is it because 0 is hard to get from operations?
In a AND operation with input of 0 simply output a 0 I think.. Any other reason?
