Why i can not read ide status from hdd?

I use a xc3s400a ev board to read ide status ,but it always return 0x7f.What's the problem it may be?The hdd is hitachi 160GB PATA compatible with ATA-7.
But i can use the board to read a hitachi 40GB and a samsung 80GB hdd.
