Hello
Before sending netlist or GDSII file to Fab..
Design is implemented on FPGA board...... if this is true then
y are FPGA run on slower clocks than ASIC?
When Fpga cannot verify timing of design ....... wht cud be possible reason to implement design on FPGA?
thanks
Shiv
This is not the only use of FPGA but yes most companies do implement the design in FPGA beforing tape out. The main reason is confidence factor if you can see your desing working ( albiet lower freq. and possibly with fewer features) you atleast know your basic design works and asic would be more of a test of at-speed .
in ASIC FPGA is used for Functionality testing with slow timming.
but in some times you do a lot of modifications to run your ASIC design on FPGA and it may consume a lot of time in migeration and debugging.
another use of FPGA is to use it inside your product like development tools and base stations and a lot of expensive products which is needed in small quantities or need capability o upgrade.
