just now i saw altera's cyclone kit in $150, which has usb2.0,vga, etc i think for educational intst. its cheap , wht abt xilinx...kind of kit like this....i mean cost effective...

i personally prefer xilinx tools....

another matter is ACTEL is the leader in Flash based fpga ..

Sure, the two boards have different features. The Xilinx kit has Ethernet and LCD, but not SRAM, SD/MMC, or audio.

I have not tried System Generator with Spartan-3E, but it should work according to these Xilinx example projects.

App note for a System Generator project that targets Virtex-4, Virtex-5, and Spartan-3E.

Xilinx has about 60% of the worldwide market. The rest is shared between Altera, Actel, QuickLogix etc.

I guess Altera is the second largest.
