Personally I'd put my money on energy-related things (thin film solar, battery technology, fuel cells etc) since a lot of commercial pressure will be on there to reduce dependence on fossil fuels etc. Read: many research groups, different angles, lots of funding, some of it fundamental research, some of it research to improve existing products / production methods.
And generally things resulting from new materials / better understanding of those. Think solid state lighting, semiconductors, optical computing, graphene, nanomaterials, ...?
Of course the essential thing about innovations/breakthroughs is that sometimes you can see where research is heading, and sometimes discoveries come out of the blue. So there's no way to tell what the future will bring...:-D
