difference pwm&pfm

Hello all, now i am an beginner to study the buck, i am confused the difference between these two architectures. Pls give me some instruction or paper, thanks ahead.

PWM changes the duty cycle to adjust the output voltage while PFM keeps the duty cycle but changes the frequency to adjust the output voltage.

PFM normally has higher efficiency @ light load.
PWM normally has higher efficiency @ heavy load.

How to detect load status to switch from PWM to PFM and vice versa?
