RPM means RedHat Package Manager. RPMs are packaged installation files for RedHat LINUX.

But there is no stable facility for automated installation or upgradation system in RedHat. Also most of the time there used to be broken binaries and failed dependancies. In RedHat world they don't give much importance to these problems. In Debian there is APT utility to manage this kind of problem. And its a rock solid application.

Also RedHat recently supporting the server releases mainly. So most of the time you have to fetch packages and install it, all by yourself. Never expect any of the RedHat upgrade or installation utility to work properly in a LIVE system. Either you have to re-install from a CD or install the new package yourself.
