What is the function of vinv and schmitt inside the VCO?

i'm no gud with PLL. now i try to find the function of the circuit when the phase detector combine with charge pump. n one more what is the function of vinv and schmitt inside the VCO? can anyone help me, please?

I think that one of the best book to understand PLL quickly is Dean's book, you can download it for free from National website.
