What is design for manufacturing(DFM) and why it is needed. Is it replacing the DRC.
What is critical in a design a DRC error or a DFM error.

Re: DFM

DFM is specifialy a concept in 90nm process and below.
DRC helps you to clear the bad layout pattern which will lead to ERRORs, such as unwanted diffusion butting, metal broken, after manufacturing.
But DFM rule point out manufacturing-unfriendly layout styles. They are not ERRORs. Those manufacturing-unfriendly layout styles may e.g. increase or decrease your transistor aspect ratio, deteriorate matching property and increase leakage in memory cells. All these phenomena are unexpected in your circuit design but will appear due to unideality in manufacturing.
