In computing, the term server is used to refer to one of the following:
* a computer program running to serve the needs or requests of other programs (referred to in this context as "clients") which may or may not be running on the same computer.
* a physical computer dedicated to running one or more such services, to serve the needs of programs running on other computers on the same network.
* a software/hardware system (i.e. a software service running on a dedicated computer) such as a database server, file server, mail server, or print server.

Their is no one server in this world to be considered as main server, their are many servers for small or big networks that serves that network (group of computers) as their main server.

1) In information technology, a server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs (and their users) in the same or other computers.

2) The computer that a server program runs in is also frequently referred to as a server (though it may be used for other purposes as well).

3) In the client/server programming model, a server is a program that awaits and fulfills requests from client programs in the same or other computers. A given application in a computer may function as a client with requests for services from other programs and also as a server of requests from other programs.

Specific to the Web, a Web server is the computer program (housed in a computer) that serves requested HTML pages or files. A Web client is the requesting program associated with the user. The Web browser in your computer is a client that requests HTML files from Web servers.

A computer, or a software package, that provides a specific kind of service to client software running on other computers. The term can refer to a particular piece of software, such as a WWW server, or to the machine on which the software is running, e.g. "Our mail server is down today, that's why e-mail isn't getting out." A single server machine can (and often does) have several different server software packages running on it, thus providing many different servers to clients on the network. Sometimes server software is designed so that additional capabilities can be added to the main program by adding small programs known as servlets.
